Kayaking West Virginia
White water rafting/canoe/ or kayak?
My husband and I would like to go white water rafting in West Virginia for our anniversary this year (July). We have never been white water rafting or anything like that, we canoe on the local rivers all the time, but they are nothing compared to the New and Gauley rivers. My husband is set on the canoe and/or kayak and doesn’t want to raft. Any advise, suggestions of places to go, etc. Thanks.
I think this trip really depends on the section of the river you want to paddle.
The New River has some quiet water stretches that you’ll be fine on:

The Gauley, on the other hand, is a true whitewater river… and unless your canoe is a whitewater canoe, and you have float bags in place and are sufficient with self rescues and straight out whitewater paddling skills, then your husband is about to put you into harm’s way. Best bet is to go with the outfitter’s raft and paddle your hearts out. Have fun!
