Kayaking Michigan Rivers

Where can I canoe? Adventurers share your stories.?

I am looking for an adventure somewhere in america, preferably close to my home state, Illinois, but I am not opposed to driving several hours to find one. I want to canoe or raft or kayak, I don’t care, down a river or something and I want it to take more than one day. I would love to camp on the waterside and/ or hunt my own food. Does anyone have a water travel experience or idea to share with me? I just need a where and how, etc. I’m not even opposed to Lake Michigan as long as I have to spend more than just a few hours on the water.

Come on up to Michigan. Where I live, near Kalkaska, there is at least one outfitter I’ve heard of who organizes canoe trips on the Manistee River. These can take a few days, depending upon how far down the river you want to go. You could also try the Au Sable River, or the Muskegon River, or any of a bunch of streams throughout the state. I don’t know about how the hunting would be in the times when the canoeing is best, but the fishing is usually quite good. Prepare to pay dearly for an out-of-state fishing license.
