Anyone with knowledge on kayaks?

How do i go about getting into kayaking in the San Diego Harbor. I’m staring at a huge open mass of water asking to be paddled through on a daily (or nightly) basis. I have no experience or knowledge of kayaking and i need to figure out what i need to do, what kind of kayak i should look into, where i can keep it, things i should avoid, and stupid things that im bound to do.

better yet, what should i check out before i get ahead of myself. im not going to race or anything, i just want to chill on the water and cruise about

Check out Aqua Adventures. Stop by or give them a call. They’ll be able to tell you all about kayaking in San Diego. It’s run by one of the highest rated instructors in the country. You can take classes or a tour from them to get started. They also have a retail shop where you can have a look at the different kayaks and demo them for free.

For kayaking in the harbor, it’s a good idea to have at least one basic lesson. You’ll learn about paddling technique and safety, including what to do if your kayak capsizes. For the harbor, you could go with either a recreational kayak– a short, wide, stable kayak designed for calm waters– or a sea kayak. But after paddling the harbor for a while, you might want to start exploring the coast, getting into surf, or going off shore in search of wildlife. In that case, you’ll want an actual sea kayak. Most are typically 16-18 feet long.
