Kayaking Checklist

Suggest a coming-of-age adventure I can share with my teen son (near Northern Colorado?)?

My son just turned 13, and unlike most cultures, here in America we don’t typically celebrate coming-of-age / adulthood / manhood.

So I’d like he and I to go on an “adventure” of sorts: something difficult and/or a bit painful since doing tough things that are uncomfortable is a part of being a man.

So far I have thought of a two-day hike up in the mountains (with at least one over-night), or going on a dog sledding tour in the winter, or even skydiving or kayaking.

Keep in mind: (1) We live in Northern Colorado, so if we can do it locally, that’s better too; (2) I’m not much of an outdoorsman, so recommendations for guides and/or guidebooks or checklists would be nice as well; (3) Willing to spend some $$$ on equipment, but not big $$$; (4) We’re in good condition–just ran a 5k on July 4th

Thanks!

Thanks for teaching your kid right! If more parents took the time to explain and demonstrate things like responsibility most of our country’s problems wouldn’t exist.

I like the outdoor adventure idea. How about a “working” dude ranch (like in the movie City Slickers). I’ve wanted to take my daughters to one but I couldn’t afford it. There are several right in your area.

How about a white water rafting trip?

How about a multi-day outdoor survival training class?

How about a week long rifle or pistol class at Gunsite ranch (gunsite.com)?

How about a week at an off road motorcycle school?
(Okay, this one doesn’t teach about responsibility but its loads of fun!)
