Newport Harbor Fishing Questions?

I'm going fishing in Newport Harbor (California) in a kayak. Is this a good idea? What kind of bait / lures are best? I will be fishing for sand bass and black maybe

If you go fishing in the port you want the opening of fish. Want to know Where are the currents. Looking for a blind spot where the bait fish will be swept to the right place for a predator, if low or black to hide. That's where you want to present a bait or lure that looks like the kind of bait to be in the water. This time of year I think we'll mackerel in the area. Mackerel is a cannibal fish, so I think that if the fish with a small cast bait or shiny alligator type that can be pretty good luck. I deep-sea fish however, and try to attract predators in the stream bottom and to catch what I think will be an easy meal.
