Gps Kayaking

I’ve just bought a small kayak, and I want to row across to the Isle of Wight. What do I need to prepare?

I want to go from Southsea to Ryde – 4 miles I think.

I guess I need to avoid the shipping lanes
Do I need distress flares?
What about spare food and water in case I lose my way. GPS?

Always best to inform the coastguard of your intended route and don’t forget to let them know when you arrive too.

It’s a busy area so a flare would be a good idea as well as a waterproof carrier for your mobile. Watch the tides too. Make sure you start at the right time so if you are going to be swept by the admittedly weaker currents in that area, you will drift across the Solent and not away from it. There will also be more chance of help in that area and more of a chance of finding somewhere to land. If your water navigation is rusty or non-existent then consider asking for a course. Should be plenty in the Portsmouth area.

You know your pace but estimate 1 mile per hour, sounds slow but better to be cautious. Don’t be afraid to call for help if it’s getting too tricky for you. Well wrapped up in the proper gear your survival time in the water could be hours. Jeans and t-shirt – half an hour if you’re lucky, even in summer.

Plan it carefully, check everything 3 or 4 times at least, and tell people where you expect to be.

Good luck and don’t forget to post the pictures. Should be a nice little adventure for you.
