Flat Water Kayaking

How do you get in and out of a rec kayak from a river bank or dock without touching the polluted water?

I can get in and out of my yak when in open water no problem, and I can get in easily by wading into the water when that’s an option. But when I’m paddling in lakes filled with human or cow dung, I have trouble getting in from banks or docks. Every time I have to “portage” I find it tough, especially if I am holding a half-rack of brew in addition to the yak. I paddle flat water around farmland, and I also enjoy paddling in areas that are polluted by industry and raw sewage, so getting soaked in “cow water” and industrial/human waste is something I wish to avoid.

Find Jesus. Really. If you can find him he’ll pull the bow up on dry land for you. I hear he’s cool like that.

If Jesus isn’t around you’ll want to take a good run at the bank (head on) and lean back just before you hit bottom. Then scootch (is that a werd?) up using your paddle until you can step out on dry land. If the bank is steep or you’re pulling out at a dock it shouldn’t be a problem. Use your paddle to stabalize the yak, set your beer down 1st, then get the hell out.

Glad to help!
