Canoe vs Kayak?

Okay, so my friend has a dugout canoe to his mom for Mother's Day (his mother always wanted a canoe), but as anyone going into the canoe, so my friend and his father will sell the boat and bought 2 kayaks in place, but its not sure if he wants to do yet!
